2022

This series of ceramic sculpture features a selection of large and completely hollow, Coil-Method ceramic sculptures. This series was originally based on X-Rays I received after becoming aware of a permanent health condition in 2019. The work reflects my new understanding of place and existence. This series is organic in shape and nature as the clay was unrestricted rather than instructed, the final piece was to be, without intention, a product. Allowing the clay to heat and cool throughout handling would let the creases and folds that adorn the sculpture to solidify in their shape and give the sculpture its posture. Time alone was the most important factor in creation, as the exterior of these pieces is less than half of an inch. Creating a hollow structure was important to the statement of the series. The sculptures capture a breathing-life quality that instinctually reminds me of our human condition and the simple fragility of life.

Using near two-hundred pounds of wet clay and being completely hollow the stature of this piece is noteworthy. The sculpture stands at about five feet tall and takes up the same space in a room as a person would. On this scale, the sculpture’s ability to connect to you more physically is afforded by the resemblance in space and density.

What does ‘Shelter’ mean to me? How can I narrate the sentiment of safety and encouragement in a natural form? I feel that shelter as a word reminds me of a maternal presence, a harboring and security thats afforded through care. These sculptures in oak and wire aim to personify that rhetoric in the round.

Plus de Vin is a sculptural interpretation of struggling with drinking in excess. The piece is made entirely made out of fragile materials, porcelain, plaster, and glass, held together with dabs of glue and wire. This piece demonstrates the fragility of sobriety and the struggle it is to keep the moving parts from toppling over onto each other.
